Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery


This 982 acre national cemetery holds 400,000 burial spaces for U.S. veterans and their spouses. It was the former grounds of the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant.

3)  Wilmington, IL

Gemini Giant, 810 E. Baltimore St.

In the 1960’s, “Muffler Man” statues could be found throughout the country. This one was reimagined as an astronaut and named after the Gemini space program. It sits near the former Launching Pad Drive-In restaurant.

Mining was an important part of the growth of this area, which includes towns with names like Carbon Hill, Coal City, and Diamond.

The Riviera Roadhouse, 1 Mile North of Braceville on Rt. 66
The Riviera was the last roadhouse on Route 66 in Illinois before burning to the ground in 2010.

7)  Gardner, IL

Two Cell Jail, E. Mazon St.

Built in 1906, this jail cell primarily served as the town’s drunk tank. Be sure to snap a picture of yourself behind bars.

Ambler-Becker Texaco Station, W. Waupansie St.
This restored Texaco station, which serves as Dwight’s Welcome Center on Route 66, houses generations of auto repair relics and a Model T firetruck.

Peoples National Bank of Kewanee, 122 W. Main Street
One of three banks designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, this is the only one still in use as a bank. Visitors are free to enter the lobby to look around.

Oughton Estate Windmill, Carriage House Lane
Dwight’s most know and adored landmark is this windmill, which once pumped water for the Oughton Estate.
